Vegan Pita Bread
I was planning on making falafel for dinner, so I asked my husband if he would come with me to the store to get pita bread. He looked at me, like this should have occurred to me, and asked why I wasn’t planning on making it. Then, I thought it was that simple. I looked up a recipe and planned on making vegan pita bread!
This was my first time making pita bread, so I know I will have to make it again to get better at it. I thought it turned out delicious! My pita bread did turn out a little too thick, but now I know next time that I need to make them thinner. I also need to do a bit more research into seeing what would make them puff up more. I am including the recipe link that I used below. I did like this recipe and I will be making pita bread again!
Vegan Pita Bread
Ingredients:
1 cup water (heated between 105-110 degrees Fahrenheit)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 ¼ tsp yeast (1 package)
~2 cups flour
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 ¾ tsp salt
Directions:
Add warm water, sugar, yeast, and 1 cup flour to the mixer. Whisk together until combined. Let rest ~15 minutes until (the mixture should bubble and foam).
Add oil, salt, 1 ½ cups flour. Using the dough hook, mix on low speed until the dough is soft and no longer sticks to the edges. If it does stick, add ¼ cup flour at a time.
Knead on low for about 5 minutes. Remove dough from the bowl onto a floured surface and turn it into a ball.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and turn the ball over so each side is coated with oil. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let rest until the dough has doubled in size (2 hours).
Remove the dough from the bowl onto a floured surface and cut into 8 uniform pieces. Form small balls and place about 1 inch apart to rest for about 30 minutes (cover with kitchen towel).
After 30 minutes, roll the dough balls into ¼ inch thick disks and let rest for about 10 minutes.
Brush a cast iron pan with oil and begin cooking the pita. About 2-3 minutes per side on medium heat, Wrap the bread in a towel to keep warm before serving.
Taste: 8/10--I need some practice!
Level of difficulty: 2/5--since it was my first time making pita bread, I was unsure of what to expect. I think next time will be easier!
Notes for next time: I think experience will help!
