Fudgy Brownies (Recipe #91)

Jacob and I decided to bake these brownies together (just FYI, it is such a fun date idea to bake together!). We followed the recipe just as it was written, but the brownies did not come out like we expected. The sides touching the pan ended up very hard, but the center was soft and chewy.

I think I need to explain this better. Basically, we had to get together the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients. After it was all together, we combined them, put them in the pan, and put them in the oven to bake. We checked the brownies after 30 minutes like the recipe suggested and they were basically liquid all the way through. We could see liquid boiling under the top layer of the brownie. We put the brownies back in for another half hour (checking them every 10 minutes). We decided to take them out because we could tell the edges were starting to burn even though the center was not cooked. We let them cool overnight. Eventually, I cut the brownies up and we tasted them. The inside was extremely fudgy and delicious, but the outsides and bottom were overdone. I am glad we took them out when we did or they probably would have burnt to the pan!

Jacob and I read the recipe together, followed all of the measurements, and proceeded with each step as written in the America’s Test Kitchen cookbook. I think that there was too much liquid in the brownies. The oil rose to the top of the batter and just sat on top while baking in the oven. I have made vegan brownies before that have turned out perfect and delicious! I am not too sure what happened with this recipe. If you have made this recipe, let me know if you have had success or not.

Taste: The taste was good (8/10), but because they were in the oven so long, the edges became really hard… 6/10

Level of difficulty: 1/5

Notes for next time: I would not make this recipe again. The brownies did not come together like traditional brownies.
