Apple Picking

When fall comes around, I know there are a few things that I just have to do. I must decorate my house for fall, embrace the season of squash, get pumpkins, and pick apples! I went apple picking with my family at Stonehill Orchard in North Collins, NY. I have so much to say about it!

First, I want to talk about the orchard. Stonehill Orchard was just beautiful. The rows of apple trees and concord grapes were endless. The sweet smell of the grapes filled the air with this beautiful aroma. I really enjoyed walking around the orchard and taking in the beauty of nature. I would highly recommend that you go apple picking this season (and every fall season!). There are a lot of beautiful orchards around Buffalo and it is such a blessing to take advantage of it!

I also want to talk about how important it is to support local farmers. I feel that that statement in itself sums up everything I want to say. My mom used to explain to me how important it was to support farmers when I was young by saying that farmers feed you three times a day. There is nothing more accurate than that! Without farmers, we would not have the food supply that we have. This is one of the reasons that I try to do activities such as apple picking or going to a local produce stand. End of rant.

I loved being able to build a connection with the food that I was going to eat. While I was picking these apples, I had a million different ways that I could use apples running through my head. I was thinking about desserts that I could make or breads that I could bake. I immediately came home and made an apple tart (don’t worry, there will be another post all about this beautiful tart!). I ended up picking a bushel of apples, so I have a lot of apples to work with, which means I have a lot of good food to bake!

I had such a good time at Stonehill Orchard! I am looking forward to going back and picking more apples!
